Admission Requirements
New River Community College (NRCC) is a public, two-year institution of higher education located in the New River Valley of Virginia. NRCC serves the residents of Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, and Pulaski Counties and the City of Radford. The College also attracts students from surrounding areas. NRCC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award the Associate Degree.
Admission to New River Community College is open to any person who has a high school diploma or its equivalent and who meets at least one of the following criteria:
1. Is at least 18 years of age;
2. Has completed the General Educational Development (GED) test; or
3. Has been determined to have the ability to benefit from the programs and courses offered by the College, as evidenced by an acceptable score on an approved ability-to-benefit test.
Students who do not meet one of the above criteria may be admitted to the College on a provisional basis. Provisional students are those who do not yet meet the age, diploma, or GED requirements for regular admission but who demonstrate the potential for success in college-level coursework. Provisional students are required to complete developmental coursework during their first semester of enrollment and must meet the regular admission criteria prior to enrolling in their second semester.
All applicants for admission to NRCC are required to submit a completed application for admission, along with an application fee. Official high school transcripts or GED scores must be submitted, along with any transcripts from other colleges or universities attended. Applicants who have not yet completed high school or obtained their GED must submit official scores from an approved ability-to-benefit test.
Once all required materials have been received, the NRCC Admissions Office will review the application and determine whether the applicant meets the criteria for regular or provisional admission. Applicants who are provisionally admitted will be notified of any developmental coursework required prior to enrolling in their first semester. All other applicants will be notified of their admission status and given information about registration and orientation.
