HTC has campuses in Brooklyn Park and Eden Prairie, and a student center in downtown Minneapolis. The college also has a number of off-campus locations, including the Hennepin County Adult Basic Education Center, the Hennepin County Government Center, and the Minneapolis Public Schools Adult Education Center.

HTC is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The college is a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system.

HTC was founded in 1965 as Hennepin Area Vocational Technical Institute. The institute was created in response to the need for skilled workers in the Twin Cities area. The institute offered programs in a variety of trades, including automotive mechanics, carpentry, electronics, and machine shop.

In 1972, the institute was renamed Hennepin Technical Institute. The name change reflected the institute's expanded mission to provide technical and vocational education to a broader range of students.

In 1981, the institute became Hennepin Technical College. The name change was made to reflect the college's status as a comprehensive technical college.

Today, HTC is one of the largest technical colleges in Minnesota. The college enrolls more than 11,000 students each year.
