The College of San Mateo was founded in 1934 as San Mateo Junior College. It was the first junior college in the San Francisco Bay Area and the second in California. The college was renamed College of San Mateo in 1937 and moved to its current location in 1954. The college has grown steadily since its founding, and now serves more than 11,000 students each year.
