Walden was founded in 1970 by two teachers, Bernie and Rita Turner, who saw a need for an institution that would allow working adults to earn a degree without having to upend their lives. The school was originally accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Walden offers over 60 degree programs, with the most popular being in business, education, psychology, and health sciences. The school has a faculty of over 1,500, most of whom are working professionals in their field who teach part-time.

Walden is known for its flexible learning options, which include online, hybrid, and on-campus courses. The school also offers a variety of start dates throughout the year, so students can begin their studies when it is convenient for them.

In addition to its academic programs, Walden also offers a number of non-credit professional development courses. These courses are designed to help working adults improve their skills and knowledge in a particular field.
