Xavier University of Louisiana is a private historically black university in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is the only Catholic HBCU in the United States and is the largest institution of higher education in the New Orleans area. Xavier was founded in 1925 by the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, a religious order of women dedicated to the education of African Americans. The university is named after St. Francis Xavier, a 16th-century Jesuit saint.

Xavier is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Louisiana Board of Regents. The university offers bachelor's degrees in over 40 areas of study, as well as master's degrees in business, education, science, and nursing. The university is also home to the Center for the Study of Catholic Higher Education, which conducts research on the role of Catholic colleges and universities in society.

Xavier has a strong commitment to service and social justice. The university's motto is "For the Greater Glory of God," and its mission is "to contribute to the promotion of a more just and humane society by preparing its students to assume roles of leadership and service in a global community." Xavier students have a long history of involvement in the civil rights movement, and the university continues to be a leader in educating African American students.
