Wingate University's athletics teams compete in the NCAA Division II and are members of the South Atlantic Conference. The university fields teams in men's and women's basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, and track and field. The university's football team competes in the Division II Football Championship Subdivision.
Wingate University was founded in 1896 by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. The university was originally named Wingate School, and it was established as a college preparatory school for young men. The school's first class consisted of 27 students and five faculty members.
In 1923, the school's name was changed to Wingate Junior College, and it began offering two-year collegiate programs. The first four-year class was graduated in 1929. In 1934, the school's name was changed to Wingate College, and it began offering bachelor's degree programs.
The school's name was changed again in 1993, this time to Wingate University, when it began offering graduate degree programs.
