Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, also known as Virginia Tech, is a public, land-grant university with a main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. The university also has educational facilities in six other cities in Virginia, as well as a study-abroad site in Switzerland. Virginia Tech offers 225 undergraduate and graduate degree programs to more than 34,000 students. The university is organized into nine colleges: Agriculture and Life Sciences, Architecture and Urban Studies, Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering, Human Resources and Education, Information Technology and Sciences, Natural Resources and Environment, and Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. Virginia Tech's athletic teams, known as the Hokies, compete in the NCAA's Division I Atlantic Coast Conference. The university's motto is Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

Virginia Tech was founded in 1872 as a land-grant college and was the first such institution in the South. The school was established as an agricultural and mechanical college and was later renamed Virginia Polytechnic Institute. In 1944, the school became a state university and was renamed Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The university has grown significantly since its founding, and today it is one of the largest universities in Virginia.

Virginia Tech is a research university and conducts more than $500 million in research each year. The university is home to a number of research institutes, including the Fralin Life Science Institute, the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science, and the Institute for Society, Culture, and Environment. Virginia Tech also operates the National Capital Region Graduate Education Center, which offers graduate degrees in a number of fields.

The university is committed to serving the Commonwealth of Virginia and the nation. Virginia Tech's Extension Service provides educational programs to Virginia residents, and the university's Virginia Cooperative Extension program is the largest in the United States. The university's Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine is one of only two veterinary schools in the country with campuses in two states.

Virginia Tech has a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. The university was one of the first in the nation to establish an Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and it is home to a number of diversity initiatives, including the ADVANCE Program for Women in Science and Engineering, the LGBTQ+ Center, and the Virginia Tech Center for Race and Gender in STEM.

Virginia Tech is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and is ranked among the top public universities in the United States.
