The University of Wyoming was founded in March 1886, four years before the state of Wyoming was admitted to the Union, making it the oldest public university in the state. The university was initially named the Wyoming Territorial University and was located in Laramie, Wyoming, on the Laramie Plains at an elevation of 7,220 feet (2194 m). The university was founded as a result of the Morrill Act, which allocated federal lands to the states for the establishment of public universities. The university was founded with the mission of providing an education in the "liberal and practical arts and sciences" to the people of the Wyoming Territory.
The university opened its doors in September 1887 with 18 students and six faculty members. The first class was held in the Territorial University Building, which is now known as Old Main. The university began offering graduate programs in 1891 and the first doctoral degree was awarded in 1897. The university experienced rapid growth in the early 20th century and by 1930, it had more than 1,000 students.
The university's growth was halted by the Great Depression and World War II, but resumed after the war. The university added a number of new programs in the 1950s and 1960s, including the School of Nursing, the School of Architecture, and the College of Education. The university experienced another period of growth in the 1970s and 1980s, becoming the largest university in the state with more than 10,000 students. The university added a number of new programs and schools in the 1990s and 2000s, including the School of Law, the School of Medicine, and the College of Business.
