Founded in 1791, the University of Vermont is a public research university and the flagship institution of the University of Vermont System. The University of Vermont is the fifth oldest university in New England and one of the first public universities established in the United States. The University of Vermont is ranked as the 40th best national university by U.S. News & World Report and is one of the original eight "Public Ivy" institutions. The University of Vermont is also a member of the Association of American Universities, the only New England university to do so.
The University of Vermont's 1,200-acre (4.9 km2) campus is nestled between the Green Mountains to the east and Lake Champlain to the west. The university is organized into seven undergraduate colleges, an graduate college, and a college of medicine. The University of Vermont's main campus is located in Burlington, Vermont's largest city, with over 42,000 residents. The University of Vermont also has campuses in Essex Junction, Williston, and South Burlington.
The University of Vermont's most popular majors include business, psychology, biology, and political science. The University of Vermont is also home to a number of research institutes and centers, including the Gund Institute for Environment, the Vermont Center for Ecostudies, and the Vermont Complex Systems Center.
