The University of Rhode Island (URI) is the flagship public research university of Rhode Island. It is the state's land grant university and is the largest university in the state, with an enrollment of over 16,000 students. The university is a member of the Association of American Universities and is ranked in the top 100 of national universities by U.S. News & World Report.

URI was founded in 1892 as the state's agricultural school and was later renamed the Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The school became a land grant college in 1900 and was renamed the Rhode Island State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. In 1911, the name was again changed, this time to the Rhode Island State College of Agriculture and Technology. In 1951, the school was renamed the University of Rhode Island.

URI offers over 80 undergraduate majors and over 60 graduate programs. The university is divided into seven colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education and Professional Studies, the College of Engineering, the College of Nursing, the College of Pharmacy, and the College of the Environment and Life Sciences.

The university's main campus is located in Kingston, Rhode Island, on 1,200 acres of land. The campus is home to over 80 buildings, including the Edward M. Kennedy Institute, the Robert L. Carothers Library and Information Commons, the Center for Biotechnology and Life Sciences, and the URI Art Museum.

URI also has two branch campuses, one in Providence, Rhode Island, and one in Narragansett, Rhode Island. The Providence campus is home to the URI Feinstein School of Education and Professional Studies, while the Narragansett campus is home to the URI Graduate School of Oceanography.

URI is a sea-grant university and a member of the Space Grant Consortium. The university is also home to the URI Coastal Institute, which is dedicated to research, education, and outreach on coastal issues.

URI is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
