Founded in 1903, the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus is the main and largest campus of the University of Puerto Rico system. It is located in the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico, on the Río Piedras barrio. It is the oldest and largest higher learning institution in the island and the Caribbean. It offers the most diverse range of academic programs in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, with over 400 undergraduate and graduate programs. The campus has a student population of over 18,000 students, making it the second largest university in Puerto Rico. The campus is also home to the only School of Medicine and School of Law in Puerto Rico.
The University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus was founded on November 22, 1903, as the Puerto Rico Normal School, with the purpose of training teachers for the public school system of Puerto Rico. It was the first higher education institution in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. The school was located in the old San Juan Arsenal building, which is now the site of the Puerto Rico Museum of Contemporary Art. In 1919, the school was renamed the Puerto Rico Normal and Industrial School. In 1924, the school was again renamed, this time to the Puerto Rico Normal and Teachers College. In 1931, the institution was renamed the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus.
The University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. It is also a member of the Association of American Universities, the Association of Universities and Colleges of Puerto Rico, and the Council of Graduate Schools.
