The university was founded in 1976 by John Sperling, a former professor at the University of California, Berkeley. The university's first campus was established in San Jose, California. The university expanded rapidly throughout the 1980s and 1990s, opening campuses across the United States. In 2000, the university launched its online degree program.

The University of Phoenix-Arizona has been criticized for its high tuition rates, aggressive marketing tactics, and low graduation rates. The university has also been accused of targeting low-income and working-class students.
