It is the third-largest university in the state of North Carolina and the 68th-largest university in the United States. UNCG was founded in 1891 as the State Normal and Industrial School and became the first public university in North Carolina to award baccalaureate degrees. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro was founded in 1891 as the State Normal and Industrial School.
