The University of North Carolina School of the Arts is a public university in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It is one of the seventeen constituent campuses of the University of North Carolina system. UNCSA is a specialized school for the performing, visual, and moving image arts, offering undergraduate and graduate degrees. It is the first state-supported arts school in the United States and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
The school was created by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1963 and opened in 1965. It is the brainchild of A.J. Fletcher, a businessman and philanthropist who donated $3 million to the cause. The university is home to the North Carolina Opera, the North Carolina Symphony, and the American Dance Festival. It is also home to the National Humanities Center.
