Founded in 1830, the University of North Alabama is the oldest state-supported institution of higher learning in Alabama. The school is located in Florence, a city in the northwest corner of the state. UNA is a comprehensive university with a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs. The school has an enrollment of about 7,000 students, the majority of whom are undergraduates.
UNA is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees. The school's five academic colleges are: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education and Human Sciences, the College of Nursing, and the College of Social Sciences.
The University of North Alabama was founded as LaGrange College by the Alabama Legislature on February 11, 1830. The school was located in the small town of LaGrange, in the east-central part of the state. The first president of the school was Robert Gamble, a Presbyterian minister from South Carolina. LaGrange College was the first state-supported college in Alabama and one of the first in the United States.
The school struggled in its early years, due in part to the economic depression of the 1830s. In 1851, the Alabama Legislature voted to move the school to the city of Florence. The school was renamed the University of North Alabama in 1872.
UNA began admitting women in 1892 and became a coeducational institution. The school began offering graduate programs in the 1950s. In 1969, the University of North Alabama became part of the newly created Alabama State University System.
The University of North Alabama is located on a 500-acre (2.0 km2) campus in Florence, Alabama. The school's main academic building is Harrison Hall, which houses the offices of the president and other administrators, as well as classrooms and laboratories. The school's library is located in the James M. Barrie Center.
The University of North Alabama is a member of the NCAA Division II and competes in the Gulf South Conference. The school's athletic teams are known as the Lions. The school's football team has won three national championships, in 1993, 1999, and 2007. The school's men's basketball team has also won a national championship, in 1979.
