The university is the flagship institution of the University System of New Hampshire, and is the largest university in the state. The university was founded in 1866 as the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts. The university is a land-, sea-, and space-grant university, and is classified as an R1 Doctoral University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The university is known for its programs in the liberal arts, business, engineering, and nursing, as well as for its research programs in the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. The university is also home to the New Hampshire Law School, the Whittemore School of Business and Economics, the School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering, and the Space Science Center. The university's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I in the America East Conference. The university has an enrollment of over 15,000 students, and is the largest university in the state.
