The University of Missouri-Columbia (Mizzou), is a public research university located in Columbia, Missouri, United States. Founded in 1839, it is the flagship campus of the University of Missouri System, and the largest university in Missouri. It is one of the 34 public universities that are members of the Association of American Universities. There are more than 300,000 MU alumni living worldwide.

Mizzou is a member of the Southeastern Conference and is the only public university in Missouri with a member of the Association of American Universities. The university also has the largest number of students enrolled in online courses among public universities in the United States.

The University of Missouri was created by an act of the Missouri General Assembly in 1839. The university was first located in St. Louis, but moved to Columbia in 1843. The university now encompasses 1,262 acres (5.1 km2) in Columbia, including the main campus, the University of Missouri Research Reactor Center, andMU Health Care.

The University of Missouri is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Mizzou has 19 schools and colleges, including the Sinclair School of Nursing, the Missouri School of Journalism, the College of Education, the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and the School of Medicine.

The University of Missouri has a strong research program. In FY 2016, MU's research expenditures totaled $251 million, ranking it 64th among public universities in the United States. The university is home to the University of Missouri Health Care system, which includes five hospitals and a children's hospital.

Mizzou athletics compete in the NCAA's Division I and are members of the Southeastern Conference. The university fields teams in 10 men's and 11 women's sports. The men's basketball team has won the most conference championships with 13, and the women's track and field team has won the most national championships with 17.
