The University of Mississippi (colloquially known as Ole Miss) is a public research university in Oxford, Mississippi. The flagship of the state's eight public universities, it is the largest university in Mississippi and one of the largest in the southeastern United States. Ole Miss is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, master's, doctorate, and professional degrees. The university's name is derived from its status as the oldest university in Mississippi.

Founded in 1848, the school began as a small private academy and has since grown into a large public research university. The school's 19th-century campus is a designated National Historic Landmark and the site of a major civil rights protest in 1962. The school is also home to a nationally recognized law school and medical center.

The university enrolls over 24,000 students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. The school's athletics teams, known as the Ole Miss Rebels, compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and are members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The university's football team has won six national championships, and the school is also known for its competitive basketball, baseball, and track and field teams.
