The University of Mississippi (colloquially known as Ole Miss) is a public research university in Oxford, Mississippi. The flagship of the state's eight public universities, it is the largest university in Mississippi and one of the largest in the southeastern United States. Ole Miss is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, master's, doctorate, and professional degrees. The university's name is derived from its status as the oldest university in Mississippi.
Founded in 1848, the school began as a small private academy and has since grown into a large public research university. The school's 19th-century campus is a designated National Historic Landmark and the site of a major civil rights protest in 1962.
