The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is a public medical school in Little Rock, Arkansas. It is part of the University of Arkansas System and is the state's only medical school. The main campus is located on approximately 37 acres (15 ha) in the downtown area of Little Rock. The school also operates a number of other campuses throughout the state, including the UAMS Northwest campus in Fayetteville and the UAMS South campus in Pine Bluff. The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences was founded in 1879 as the Little Rock Medical College. The college was initially housed in the Little Rock City Hospital, which was also the teaching hospital for the college. In 1887, the college was renamed the Arkansas Medical College, and in 1907 it became part of the University of Arkansas. The school remained at the City Hospital until 1911, when it moved to a new building on West Markham Street. In 1929, the school moved to its current location on University Avenue.
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences offers a variety of undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees. The school has six colleges: the College of Medicine, the College of Nursing, the College of Pharmacy, the College of Public Health, the Graduate School, and the UAMS Medical Center. The College of Medicine offers a four-year program leading to the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. The College of Nursing offers a variety of programs leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), and the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degrees. The College of Pharmacy offers a four-year program leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree. The College of Public Health offers a variety of programs leading to the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree.
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is home to a number of research institutes and centers, including the Arkansas Cancer Research Center, the Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute, the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy, and the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. The UAMS Medical Center is a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The hospital offers a variety of services, including emergency care, cancer treatment, and heart surgery.
