The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) is a public historically black university (HBCU) located in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, United States. Founded in 1873, the second oldest public university in the state of Arkansas. UAPB is a member-school of the University of Arkansas System and Thurgood Marshall College Fund. It is known for its programs in agriculture, fisheries, and forestry.
The university offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The university has an enrollment of 2,694 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 16:1. The campus covers over 400 acres (1.6 km2) of land.
The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff was founded in 1873 as the Branch Normal College. It was created to train teachers for the African-American population in the state of Arkansas. The school was renamed the Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical, and Normal College in 1899. In 1927, the name was changed to the State Agricultural, Mechanical, and Normal College. In 1929, the name was again changed to the Arkansas Agricultural and Mechanical College. In the 1930s, the school was designated as a land-grant college. In 1974, the name was changed to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
The university is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The athletics teams are known as the Golden Lions. The football team has won eight conference championships and has made one appearance in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.
