The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is a public research university located in Anchorage, Alaska. UAA also administers four community campuses spread across Southcentral Alaska. These include Kenai Peninsula College, Kodiak College, Mat-Su College, and Prince William Sound College. Together, the four community campuses enroll about 2,300 students. UAA is the largest institution of higher learning in Alaska and is one of the largest in the United States by land area. It is also the state's largest research university.
UAA was established in 1954 as the Anchorage Community College (ACC). In 1966, ACC became a four-year institution and was renamed the Alaska Methodist University (AMU). In 1975, AMU merged with the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) and was renamed the University of Alaska Anchorage-Fairbanks (UAA-F). In 1977, UAA-F split into two separate institutions: the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) and the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF).
UAA is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. It offers over 100 undergraduate and graduate degrees through its six colleges: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Public Policy, College of Education, College of Engineering and Mines, College of Health, and Community and Technical College. UAA's research enterprise is conducted through its institutes and centers, which include the Alaska Center for Energy and Power, the Alaska Native Studies Consortium, the Center for Alaska Coastal Studies, and the Institute of Social and Economic Research.
UAA is a member of the NCAA Division II and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Its sports teams are nicknamed the Seawolves and compete in basketball, cross country, skiing, soccer, track and field, and volleyball.
