The United States Naval Academy (USNA) is a four-year coeducational federal service academy located in Annapolis, Maryland. Established in 1845, the Naval Academy today educates and trains officers for commissioning primarily into the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. The Academy is also one of the nation's top higher education institutions, consistently ranking among the top colleges and universities in various college ranking publications. USNA graduates earn bachelor's degrees and are typically commissioned as Navy or Marine Corps ensigns or second lieutenants. The Academy operates on a semester system with two semesters in the fall and spring, and a shorter summer term. Students typically arrive at the Academy in early July for "Induction Day" and "Plebe Summer", a demanding seven-week introduction to military life and academics. The academic program is divided into the "Core Curriculum" and "Major Program". The Core Curriculum consists of four years of English, History, Mathematics, Science (with laboratory), and Foreign Language study. Students in the Major Program complete one of 25 different "majors" leading to a B.S. degree. USNA graduates are expected to serve at least five years of active duty, with Marine graduates fulfilling three of those years as infantry officers.
