The United States Air Force Academy (USAF Academy, or simply the Academy), is a military academy for officer candidates for the United States Air Force. Its campus is located in the western United States in Colorado, immediately north of Colorado Springs in El Paso County. The Academy's stated mission is "to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become leaders of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation." It is the youngest of the five U.S. service academies, having been founded in 1954, and is also the smallest of the five with a student body of about 4,000.
The Academy is a degree-granting institution with an emphasis on engineering, mathematics, and the sciences. The majority of cadets are drawn from high schools in the western United States, although a significant number are from the eastern United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, the Marianas, the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia. The Academy graduates about 1,000 cadets each year. Cadets are required to adhere to the Cadet Honor Code, which states "We will not lie, steal, or cheat, nor tolerate among us anyone who does." The Academy's motto is "Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do."
The Academy is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and currently offers bachelor's degrees in a variety of fields. The majority of graduates go on to serve as active-duty officers in the United States Air Force, although a small number of graduates have chosen to pursue careers in the private sector or public service.
