Truman State University is a public liberal arts and sciences university in Kirksville, Missouri. It is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. Truman is the only public university in Missouri with a student-to-faculty ratio of less than 10-to-1 and is one of only six public universities nationwide with more than 90 percent of its faculty holding the terminal degree in their field. More than 98 percent of Truman's tenured and tenure-track faculty members teach undergraduate courses, and the average class size is just over 20 students.

Truman was founded in 1867 as the North Missouri Normal School and Commercial College, the first public institution of higher education in northeast Missouri. In 1906, the school became known as the Northeast Missouri State Teachers College, and in 1971 it was renamed Northeast Missouri State University. In 1996, the Missouri Legislature designated the university as the state's only public liberal arts and sciences university, and it was renamed Truman State University in honor of U.S. President Harry S. Truman, who was born in nearby Lamar.

Truman offers more than 55 undergraduate majors and 20 graduate programs, all of which lead to either a Bachelor's or Master's degree. The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Truman is categorized as a Doctoral/Professional University by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Truman State University is located in Kirksville, Missouri, a town of about 17,000 people in the northeast corner of the state. The university's main campus is situated on 200 acres (0.81 km2) of land in the northwest part of the city. The campus is bounded by Normal Avenue on the north, South Street on the south, Franklin Street on the east, and Young Street on the west.

Truman's athletic teams are known as the Bulldogs and compete in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region. The university is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) for most sports. Truman has been a member of the GLVC since it was founded in 1972. The Bulldogs have won numerous conference championships in various sports, and the men's basketball team has made three appearances in the NCAA Division II tournament, most recently in 2019.
