Tiffin University was founded in 1888 as the Tiffin Conservatory of Music. The conservatory was founded by Dr. George C. Hildebrandt, a German immigrant who came to the United States in 1881. In 1896, the conservatory was renamed the Tiffin College of Music.

In the early 1900s, the college began to offer other programs of study, including a business school and a school of education. In the 1920s, the college began to offer degrees in the liberal arts. In the 1930s, the college was accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. In the 1940s, the college began to offer degrees in the sciences. In the 1950s, the college began to offer degrees in business and education. In the 1960s, the college began to offer degrees in criminal justice and health sciences. In the 1970s, the college became a university and began to offer graduate degrees.
