The University of Montana-Western is a public university located in Dillon, Montana. Founded in 1893, the university is the state's oldest institution of higher education. The University of Montana-Western was founded in 1893 as the Montana State Normal School, a teacher's college. The school was the first institution of higher education in Montana and the first public college west of the Continental Divide. The normal school offered two-year degrees in teaching. In 1899, the school's name was changed to the Western Montana College of Education, and the curriculum was expanded to include four-year degrees. In 1965, the college was renamed again, this time to the Western Montana College of the University of Montana. The university became part of the Montana University System in 1974. In 1989, the college was renamed the University of Montana-Western.
