The New England Conservatory of Music (NEC) is a private music school in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. It is the oldest independent school of music in the United States. NEC was founded in 1867 by Eben Tourjee and is located in the Fenway-Kenmore neighborhood of Boston. The five-story brownstone building, designed by Charles Follen McKim, was completed in 1899 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1999.
NEC offers undergraduate and graduate programs in music performance, music education, music theory, musicology, and composition, and is one of the most prestigious music schools in the world. The school has an enrollment of about 1,000 students, 350 of whom are in the undergraduate program.
NEC's faculty comprises over 90 full-time and 200 adjunct instructors. The Conservatory is a member of the National Association of Schools of Music and is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
NEC is home to the New England Conservatory Orchestra, the oldest continuously operating orchestra in the United States, which gave its first public performance in 1866. The orchestra performs regularly at Boston Symphony Hall and other venues, and has toured internationally.
The New England Conservatory Chorus is also a highly regarded ensemble, which has performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops Orchestra, among others.
The NEC Jazz Orchestra, formerly the Big Band, is one of the premier jazz ensembles in the country. The ensemble has toured nationally and internationally, and has won several DownBeat magazine Student Music Awards.
NEC's music education programs are among the most highly regarded in the world. The school offers a Bachelor of Music in Music Education, a Master of Music in Music Education, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Music Education. The school also offers a number of non-degree programs, including a Professional Studies Certificate and a Artist Diploma.
