Tarleton State University is a public university located in Stephenville, Texas. The university is a member of the Texas A&M University System. Tarleton State University was founded in 1899 as John Tarleton Agricultural College. The college was named after John Tarleton, a Scottish-born Texan who donated $10,000 to the college. The college became a four-year institution in 1917 and was renamed Tarleton State Teachers College. In 1949, the college was renamed Tarleton State College. The college became a university in 1973 and was renamed Tarleton State University. The university offers associate's, bachelor's, and master's degrees in a variety of fields. The university has an enrollment of over 13,000 students.
