Founded in 1892, Strayer University is a private, for-profit institution of higher education headquartered in Washington, D.C. It offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in business administration, accounting, information technology, education, public administration, and criminal justice. As of 2019, Strayer University enrolled approximately 20,000 students across its 80+ locations in the United States and online.
The university was founded by Dr. S. Robert Strayer, a Methodist minister, as a business college in Baltimore, Maryland. The school initially focused on teaching stenography and bookkeeping, but soon began offering courses in other business-related subjects. In 1898, the college was renamed Strayer's Business College, and in 1899, it moved to Washington, D.C.
In the early 1900s, Strayer expanded its curriculum to include courses in liberal arts and sciences, and in 1909, it was granted the authority to award associate degrees. In 1925, the college was renamed Strayer College, and in 1969, it became Strayer University. The university has been accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education since 1927.
Strayer University offers associate's, bachelor's, and master's degrees in a variety of business-related fields, as well as online and on-campus programs. The university's main campus is located in Washington, D.C., and its online programs are available to students worldwide.
