Founded in 1885 by former California Governor and U.S. Senator Leland Stanford and his wife, Jane, Stanford University is one of the world’s leading research and teaching institutions. Located in Stanford, California, the university shares its 8,180-acre campus with Stanford Health Care and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.
Stanford faculty and alumni have founded many companies, including Google, Hewlett-Packard, Nike, and Sun Microsystems. Thirty-three Stanford faculty members and alumni have won the Nobel Prize, including the late physicist Richard Feynman.
The university enrolls approximately 7,000 undergraduate students and 10,000 graduate students from all 50 states and more than 90 countries. Stanford offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in a wide range of disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering.
Stanford’s undergraduate program is one of the most selective in the United States, with an acceptance rate of just 4.8 percent for the class of 2022. The university’s graduate programs are also highly competitive, with an overall acceptance rate of 14 percent for the class of 2020.
Stanford’s campus is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, about 30 miles from San Francisco and 20 miles from Silicon Valley. The university is adjacent to Palo Alto, home to many high-tech companies, and is also close to several major research centers, including the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.
In addition to its academic programs, Stanford offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including more than 850 student organizations, NCAA Division I athletics, and a vibrant arts scene. The university also operates several world-renowned research institutes, including the Hoover Institution, the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, and the Woods Institute for the Environment.
