Southern Oregon University (SOU) is a public university located in Ashland, Oregon, United States. It was founded in 1872 and became a four-year institution in 1956. It offers more than 140 undergraduate and graduate programs in a wide range of disciplines.
SOU is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. It is the only public university in Oregon that is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges.
The university's campus is situated on 175 acres (71 ha) of land in the scenic Rogue Valley, near the Cascade Mountains and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The campus features several historic buildings, including the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office-designated Ashland Armory, which was built in 1914 and is used by the university's ROTC program.
SOU is a designated Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation and is home to more than 2,000 trees. The university also has a number of sustainability initiatives, including a campus-wide recycling program and a solar array that provides 10 percent of the university's electricity.
The university's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference. SOU's men's basketball team won the conference championship in 2014 and 2015, and the women's soccer team won the conference championship in 2016.
