Southeastern is the largest university in the nine-campus University of Louisiana System and the third largest university in Louisiana. Southeastern Louisiana University was founded in 1925 as Hammond Junior College. The college was established by the Tangipahoa Parish School Board in response to the growing need for higher education in the parish. The junior college began offering four-year degrees in 1950 and became a member of the University of Louisiana System in 1974.
The university is located on a 1,600-acre campus in Hammond, Louisiana, about 60 miles north of New Orleans. The campus is home to more than 80 buildings, including academic buildings, residence halls, and athletic facilities.
