Founded in 1879, Sam Houston State University is the third-oldest public institution of higher learning in the State of Texas. It is named for one of Texas' most famous historical figures, General Sam Houston, who made his home in Huntsville after he served as the first and third President of the Republic of Texas. The university consists of eight colleges and offers more than 160 undergraduate and graduate programs. The main campus is located in Huntsville, Texas, about 70 miles north of Houston. The university also has two branch campuses, one in Conroe and one in The Woodlands.
The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.
The university's colors are orange and white, and its mascot is the Bearkat.
The university's sports teams compete in the NCAA Division I Southland Conference. The Bearkats have won 16 conference championships and have made seven appearances in the NCAA Division I Football Championship.
The university is home to the Sam Houston State University Museum, which houses more than 200,000 artifacts and specimens. The museum is open to the public and offers a variety of educational programs.
