Saint Johns University is a private Catholic university in New York City. Founded in 1870 by the Congregation of the Mission (C.M., the Vincentian Fathers), the university is named after Saint John the Baptist. St. John's is organized into five schools and six graduate schools. As of 2019, the university has a total of 20,452 undergraduate students and 4,419 graduate students. The campus is located in the borough of Queens, with its main campus in the Hillcrest neighborhood.
St. John's is one of only two Catholic universities in the United States (the other being Boston College) that is a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. The university is also a member of the New York Consortium for Catholic Higher Education. In 2019, St. John's was ranked the 40th-best national university in the United States by U.S. News & World Report.
The university was founded in 1870 by the Vincentian Fathers of the Roman Catholic Church in response to an invitation by the first Bishop of Brooklyn, John Loughlin, to establish a Catholic college in his diocese. St. John's College was originally located in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. In the 1950s, the Vincentian Fathers purchased the land where the current Queens campus sits, in the Hillcrest neighborhood of the borough. In the 1960s, the college expanded its programs into graduate education, and in 1971, the New York State Board of Regents granted St. John's University status as an independent institution.
The university is organized into five schools: the School of Arts and Sciences, the Peter J. Tobin College of Business, the School of Education, the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and the Tandon School of Engineering. The six graduate schools are: the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Tobin College of Business, the School of Education, the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, the Tandon School of Engineering, and the St. John's School of Law.
St. John's offers more than 100 undergraduate majors and minors, as well as over 60 graduate programs. The most popular majors among undergraduates are business, education, nursing, and psychology. The university is also home to the St. John's Red Storm men's basketball team, which has made 14 NCAA Tournament appearances and won the NCAA Championship in 1985.
