Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) is a private research university and space-grant institution in Troy, New York, United States. Founded in 1824, RPI was the first polytechnic institute in the English-speaking world. As of 2017, it is ranked 59th in the world and 20th in the United States by the QS World University Rankings.

RPI is made up of five schools: the School of Architecture, the School of Engineering, the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, the School of Science, and the Lally School of Management & Technology. The university also offers a number of interdisciplinary programs, such as the Interdisciplinary Computing and Information Science program.

RPI's main campus is situated on a hill overlooking the city of Troy and the Hudson River. The campus is home to a number of historic buildings, including the President's House, the oldest continuously inhabited house in the city of Troy, and the oldest building on the RPI campus. The campus also features a number of green spaces, including the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Nature Preserve, which is home to a number of rare and endangered species.

RPI is a member of the Association of American Universities, the Association of Independent Technological Universities, and the New York Space Grant Consortium. The university is also home to a number of research centers and institutes, including the Center for Automation Technologies and Systems, the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies, the Center for Earth and Environmental Science, and the Rensselaer Nanotechnology Center.

RPI is one of the oldest and most prestigious polytechnic institutes in the United States. The university has a long history of producing groundbreaking research and producing some of the world's most accomplished alumni. RPI's alumni include a Nobel Prize winner, an Academy Award winner, two Pulitzer Prize winners, and a Fields Medal winner.
