Rabbinical Seminary of America (RSA) is an American yeshiva located in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City. The seminary, which is also known as Yeshiva University's Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS), is a modern orthodox rabbinical school. It is one of the largest and most influential of the over 100 yeshivas in the United States.
Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary was founded in 1896 by Rabbi Bernard Revel, the first and only president of Yeshiva University. The seminary was created in order to train rabbis in America who would be able to meet the needs of the growing Jewish community in the United States. The seminary's first class graduated in 1900.
Rabbinical Seminary of America has produced many prominent rabbis and Jewish leaders. RSA alumni include Rabbi Meir Soloveichik, Rabbi Herschel Schachter, Rabbi Michael Rosensweig, Rabbi Dovid Gottlieb, Rabbi Kenneth Brander, and Rabbi Mayer Twersky. The seminary is also home to the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Memorial Library, which contains over 200,000 volumes and is one of the largest Judaica libraries in the world.
Rabbinical Seminary of America is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The seminary offers a four-year program leading to the ordination of rabbis. The seminary's curriculum includes courses in Talmud, halakha (Jewish law), Bible, homiletics, and Jewish philosophy. In addition, students are required to complete a year of study in Israel.
