Admission Requirements
Purdue University-Main Campus is a public research university in West Lafayette, Indiana, and the flagship campus of the Purdue University system. The university was founded in 1869 after Lafayette businessman John Purdue donated land and money to establish a college of science, technology, and agriculture in his namesake city. The first classes were held in 1874, with six instructors and 39 students.
Today, Purdue enrolls over 43,000 students from all 50 states and over 130 countries. The university offers more than 200 undergraduate majors and over 70 graduate programs through its 13 colleges and schools. Purdue is a member of the Association of American Universities and is classified as an R1 Doctoral University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
Purdue's admissions process is selective; the university received over 42,000 applications for the fall 2019 semester and had an acceptance rate of 57%. Admitted students had an average high school GPA of 3.75 and an average ACT score of 29. Purdue does not require the SAT for admission, but does consider SAT scores if submitted.
To be considered for admission, students must submit an application, high school transcripts, and ACT or SAT scores (if available). Purdue uses a holistic review process and considers each applicant's academic record, extracurricular involvement, and personal experiences when making admissions decisions.
