Founded in 1946, Portland State University is a public research university located in the southwest University District of downtown Portland, Oregon, United States. It is the only public urban university in the state of Oregon and is also the largest university in the state, with a student body of over 30,000 students. The university offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in over 130 undergraduate and graduate programs through its eight schools and colleges. Portland State is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
Portland State University was founded as the Vanport Extension Center in June 1946, following the closure of the Vanport College Center of Oregon State University, which operated for two years during World War II. The center was created to serve veterans of the war returning to the Portland area. The university then became known as the "Oregon State University at Portland" until 1955, when it was renamed "Portland State College". In 1969, the school was granted university status and became known as "Portland State University".
The university is located on a 50-acre (20 ha) campus in the southwest University District of downtown Portland. The campus is bounded by Southwest 6th Avenue to the south, Southwest Harrison Street to the north, Southwest Park Avenue to the east, and Southwest College Street to the west. The campus is also adjacent to the Portland State University Library, which is the largest public library in the state of Oregon.
The university offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in over 130 undergraduate and graduate programs through its eight schools and colleges. These include the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of Business Administration, the School of Education, the School of Engineering and Computer Science, the School of Fine and Performing Arts, the School of Social Work, the Graduate School, and the Honors College.
Portland State University is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. The university is also a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Association of American Universities, and the Oregon University System.
