Ohio State University-Main Campus is a public research university in Columbus, Ohio. The flagship campus of the Ohio State University System, it is the largest university in Ohio by student enrollment and the second-largest university in the United States by total enrollment. It is a land-grant university and a member of the Association of American Universities. Founded in 1870 as a land-grant university and the ninth university in Ohio with the Morrill Act of 1862, the university was originally known as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College. The college began with a focus on training students in various agricultural and mechanical disciplines but it developed into a comprehensive university under the direction of then-Governor Rutherford B. Hayes and in 1878 the Ohio General Assembly passed a law changing the name to "The Ohio State University". The main campus in Columbus, Ohio, has since grown into the third-largest university campus in the United States. The university also operates regional campuses in Lima, Mansfield, Marion, Newark, and Wooster.

Ohio State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. It is categorized as an R1 Doctoral University with the highest research activity in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education and is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities. The university has an extensive student life program, with over 1,300 student organizations; intercollegiate, club, and intramural sports teams; and fraternities and sororities. Ohio State athletic teams compete in Division I of the NCAA and are known as the Ohio State Buckeyes. They are a member of the Big Ten Conference. The Buckeyes have won 52 national championships, including 38 team championships and 14 individuals titles. The Buckeyes football team, recognized as having the best record in college football history, has won 8 national championships. The men's basketball team has won 1 national championship.
