Oakland University is a public research university in Auburn Hills and Rochester Hills, Michigan. The university was founded in 1957 by Matilda R. Oakland, a teacher from Pontiac, Michigan. The university is organized into eight academic colleges and schools, and its main campus covers 1,443 acres (5.85 km2) with over 120 buildings. The university offers more than 140 degree programs and is classified as a Doctoral University: Higher Research Activity by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

Oakland University is a member of the American Association of Universities, a selective group of 62 public and private research universities in the United States. The university is also a member of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), an organization of public research universities, land-grant institutions, and state university systems.

The university's athletic teams are known as the Golden Grizzlies and compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as members of the Horizon League. The men's basketball team has won two conference championships and made one appearance in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. The women's basketball team has won four conference championships and made six appearances in the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament.

The campus is home to over 120 buildings, including the Oakland Center, a multi-purpose facility that houses classrooms, offices, a dining hall, and a fitness center. The Oakland Center is the largest building on campus and can accommodate up to 3,000 people.

The campus is also home to the Meadow Brook Amphitheatre, a 4,000-seat outdoor amphitheater that hosts concerts and other events. The Meadow Brook Music Festival, a classical music festival, is held at the amphitheater each summer.

The campus is served by the Oakland University Police Department and the Oakland University Fire Department.
