Northwestern University is a private research university with campuses in Evanston and Chicago in Illinois, United States. Founded in 1851, the university is one of the oldest in the Midwest. Northwestern is a large research university with a comprehensive doctoral program and attracts over $700 million in sponsored research each year. The university's endowment is valued at over $11 billion as of 2018, making it the tenth-largest endowment of any university in the United States. Northwestern has over 50 Nobel laureates and over 100 Pulitzer Prize winners, as well as many other distinguished alumni. The university consistently ranks among the top 100 national universities in the United States and the top 50 private universities. It is a member of the Association of American Universities and competes in the Big Ten Conference.

Northwestern University was founded in 1851 by John Evans, for whom the city of Evanston is named, and eight other lawyers, businessmen and Methodist leaders. The university's founding purpose was to serve the Northwest Territory, an area that today includes the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and parts of Minnesota. The university has since grown to become one of the largest private research universities in the United States, with campuses in Evanston and Chicago.

The university is organized into 12 schools and colleges, including the Feinberg School of Medicine, the Pritzker School of Law, the Kellogg School of Management, the Medill School of Journalism, the School of Education and Social Policy, and the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. Northwestern offers over 200 undergraduate majors and nearly 150 graduate and professional programs. The university is also home to the Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music, the Block Museum of Art, the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, the Buffett Institute for Global Studies, the Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics, the Center for Talent Development, the J.L. Kellogg School of Management, the Kellogg Biological Station, the Knight Lab, the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Medill School of Journalism, the School of Education and Social Policy, the School of Law, the School of Music, the Segal Design Institute, the Transportation Center, and the University Theater.

The university's athletic teams, the Wildcats, compete in the NCAA Division I Big Ten Conference. The university is a member of the Association of American Universities and is ranked among the top 100 national universities and the top 50 private universities in the United States.
