Northwestern State University of Louisiana (NSU) is a four-year public university in Natchitoches, Louisiana. NSU is a member of the University of Louisiana System and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. NSU was founded in 1884 as the Louisiana State Normal School and was the first school in Louisiana to offer degree programs in nursing and business. NSU is now the largest provider of nursing education in the state and offers over 50 undergraduate and graduate programs. NSU has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is home to the Louisiana Scholars' College, the state's only public honors college. NSU is also home to the NSU Demons, the school's athletic teams. The Demons compete in Division I of the NCAA and are members of the Southland Conference. NSU has a long history of success in athletics, particularly in basketball, and has produced a number of professional athletes.
