Northern Michigan University (NMU) is a public university in Marquette, Michigan. The university was established in 1899 and offers associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in over 60 programs of study. NMU is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and offers 23 varsity sports. The university's athletic teams are known as the Wildcats and compete in NCAA Division II.
NMU was founded as the Northern State Normal School in 1899 to train teachers for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The school's first class consisted of 26 students and was held in the basement of a local church. In 1907, the school was renamed Northern Michigan College of Education and moved to its current location on College Avenue in Marquette. The college became a four-year institution in 1925 and was renamed Northern Michigan University.
During World War II, NMU helped train soldiers in the Army Specialized Training Program and the Navy V-12 Program. After the war, enrollment at the university increased dramatically, reaching over 5,000 students by the mid-1950s. In the 1960s and 1970s, NMU underwent a period of growth and expansion, adding new academic programs, buildings, and facilities. Today, the university enrolls over 9,000 students from all 50 states and more than 60 countries.
NMU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and offers over 60 undergraduate and graduate programs of study. The university's most popular majors include business, nursing, education, and engineering. NMU also offers a unique program called the Great Lakes Maritime Academy, which is the only accredited maritime academy in the Midwest. The academy offers a four-year degree in maritime science and engineering and is located on the shores of Lake Superior.
