Northeastern University was founded in 1898 as the Evening Institute for Younger Men by Boston YMCA. The institute was created in response to the growing need for evening classes for young men who were working during the day. The institute offered courses in subjects such as English, History, Mathematics, and Languages. In 1903, the institute was renamed Northeastern College and began offering daytime classes. In 1916, the college moved to its current location in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood. In 1930, Northeastern College merged with the Boston YMCA's School of Technology to form Northeastern University. The university continued to grow in the following years, adding new programs and schools. In 1952, the university established the first cooperative education program in the United States. Cooperative education is a program in which students alternate between periods of study and periods of paid work in their field of interest. The program allows students to gain real-world experience while still completing their degree.
