Northeastern Illinois University is a public university located in Chicago, Illinois. The university is a member of the University of Illinois system and offers over 80 undergraduate and graduate programs. The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
The university was founded in 1867 as the North-Western College of Education. The college was established to meet the needs of the growing population of Chicago. The college was originally located in the Old University of Chicago building on the city's south side. In 1869, the college moved to its current location on the city's north side.
The college was renamed Northeastern Illinois State Normal School in 1899. The school's name was changed to Northeastern Illinois State Teachers College in 1917. In 1921, the college began offering four-year degrees and was renamed Northeastern Illinois State College. The college was renamed Northeastern Illinois University in 1971.
The university enrolls over 9,000 students. The student body is racially and ethnically diverse. The university's campus is located on 67 acres of land. The campus includes several buildings, including the Center for Science and the Arts, the Student Union, and the Library.
