New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) is a public university in Las Vegas, New Mexico. It is one of the state's eight state universities and is the only one located in the northern part of the state. NMHU offers bachelor's and master's degrees in a variety of disciplines, including business, education, engineering, and nursing. The university is also home to a number of research centers, including the Center for Rural Health and the Center for Energy and Environmental Research.

NMHU was founded in 1893 as the New Mexico Normal School, a teacher-training institution. The school became a four-year college in 1941 and was renamed the New Mexico Highlands University in 1963. The university has a long history of serving the needs of the state's rural and Native American populations. In recent years, NMHU has expanded its reach beyond the state of New Mexico, with students coming from all over the United States and more than 40 countries.

NMHU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The university is also home to a chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.
