Founded in 1837, Mount Holyoke College is a highly selective, liberal arts college for women located in South Hadley, Massachusetts, United States. It is one of the oldest women's colleges in the world and the first in the United States. Mount Holyoke is part of the Five Colleges Consortium, which allows its students to take classes at four other Pioneer Valley institutions: Amherst College, Hampshire College, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Mount Holyoke's 2,200-acre (8.9 km2) campus is located in the Connecticut River Valley, with the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority providing free bus service to and from nearby cities such as Northampton and Holyoke. The College is about 80 miles (130 km) from both Boston and New York City.
Mount Holyoke offers over fifty majors in the liberal arts and sciences, including interdisciplinary programs and pre-professional tracks. The most popular majors are English, psychology, economics, political science, and biology. The College also offers a five-year joint Bachelor of Arts/Master of Arts program in partnership with Smith College and Hampshire College.
Mount Holyoke is known for its rigorous academic program, diverse student body, and beautiful campus. The College is also committed to social justice and sustainability, with over fifty student organizations dedicated to these causes. Mount Holyoke's faculty includes several Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winners, as well as Fulbright, Guggenheim, and MacArthur Fellows.
