Morehead State University was founded in 1887 as Morehead Normal School, a teacher training institution. The school became Morehead State Teachers College in 1926 and began offering bachelor's degrees in education. In 1948, the name was changed to Morehead State College and the school began offering degrees in other liberal arts disciplines. In 1963, Morehead State was granted university status and began offering graduate degrees.
