Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) is a public, historically black university (HBCU) located in Itta Bena, Mississippi. The university is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Founded in 1947, MVSU is the only public, four-year HBCU in the Mississippi Delta region. The university offers bachelor's and master's degrees in a variety of disciplines.
MVSU's history began in 1946 when the Mississippi Legislature passed a bill to establish a junior college in the Mississippi Delta region. The school was originally named Mississippi Vocational College and opened its doors in September 1947 with an initial enrollment of just over 200 students. The school was renamed Mississippi Valley State College in 1974 and became Mississippi Valley State University in 1982.
MVSU has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges since 1951. The university's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I and are members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
MVSU's campus covers over 1,200 acres (4.9 km2) of land in the Mississippi Delta region. The university's main campus is located in Itta Bena, about 10 miles (16 km) from Greenwood, Mississippi. The university also has two branch campuses, one in Leflore County and one in Sunflower County.
MVSU offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees through five academic colleges: the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Applied Sciences; the College of Arts and Sciences; the College of Business and Public Administration; the College of Education and Human Sciences; and the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences.
The university's athletic teams are known as the Delta Devils and compete in the NCAA Division I. The Delta Devils are members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference and have won numerous conference championships in various sports.
