The Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) is a public maritime college in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. The academy is the oldest maritime college in the United States and one of only seven maritime academies. It is also one of the few maritime colleges in the world that offers a co-operative education program. MMA offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in maritime-related fields, as well as professional development and training programs.
MMA was founded in 1891 as the Massachusetts Nautical Training School. The school was created in response to the growing need for maritime officers in the rapidly expanding merchant marine industry. The school trained officers for the merchant marine and the US Navy. In the early years, the school was located in Boston and later moved to its current location in Buzzards Bay.
MMA is accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The academy is also licensed by the US Coast Guard to train cadets for the merchant marine and the US Navy.
MMA offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs in maritime-related fields. Undergraduate programs include Marine Engineering, Marine Transportation, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Technology. Graduate programs include Maritime Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Port and Terminal Management, and Marine Environmental Science and Policy.
The academy also offers professional development and training programs for maritime professionals. These programs include the Professional Mariner's Program, the Marine Engineer's Program, and the Naval Architect's Program.
MMA is home to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Museum, which houses a collection of maritime artifacts, documents, and photographs. The museum is open to the public and is located on the academy's campus.
